AVR athlete Luke Reed made a 550-mile round trip to Llanberis North Wales, to take part in the Slateman Triathlon, writes Dave Mutter.

This years event saw 1250 competitors taking part from all over the UK. The race consisted of 1000m lake swim which was cut to 500m due to the water temp in the Lake only being 10 degrees!

Next a 51k hilly bike ride, followed by an 11k trail run around an old slate quarry. Luke was very pleased with his performance in the race finishing 88th overall in a time of 2 hours 44 mins.

His splits were 10:20 for the chilly swim, 1:33:56 for the very windy and hilly bike, which was an average of over 19mph.

He finished with 56:50 for the run which included 1171ft of climbing.
