Chard 2nds were 26-16 winners when they hosted Wiveliscombe 2nds, writes Gavin Smillie.
A young and athletic Wiveliscombe 2nds gave Chard 2nds quite a workout! Given that most of the Chard XV had seen action the night before, the last thing they were wanting to face was a fleet-footed youthful opposition!
Chard kicked off and, just as captain Brian Sugar had asked for, penned the visitors back and it was not long before Niall Crouch crossed to open the scoring.
Straight from the restart Chard went on the attack and the pack, controlling the game, again forced the opposition to defend in their own 22 and with some slick passing from George Russo and Ben Lock, Connor Moon eased his way through a gap to score the second try. Crouch crossed again before the break and, although Wiveliscombe had the final say in the half, Chard trooped off with a 21-7 midway lead.
The second half was a closer affair and with the heat getting to both teams the rugby became a little more scrappy and gaps began to appear, favouring the running game.
A fantastic covering tackle by Andrew McKerrow followed by a turnover allowed McKerrow to then clear his lines and put the action back into the visitors’ 22.
Chard won the ball and Ash Wilson marked his return with a try.
The visitors had the last word, but, in their case, it was all too late to change the outcome and Chard ended the game as worthy winners.
