Honiton 2nds went down heavily at home to Paignton, losing 52-0.

As well as facing a powerful opposition side with a heavy pack, the Lacemen also had to contend with difficult weather conditions.

Paignton’s pack dominated proceedings for long periods and, with their team playing down the slope in the first half, breaking plenty of tackles to score sufficient tries to hold a commanding position at half-time.

Playing with the slope after the break Honiton rallied in the early exchanges, but the South Devon side’s backs enjoyed continual good ball from their forwards to cut through the beleaguered Honiton defensive line to rack up further scores.

Honiton were also hamstrung by injuries to such a degree that 10 minutes into the second half the game went to uncontested scrums.

A Honiton coach said: “The lads hung in there after the break, but there’s no escaping the fact that it is a disappointing defeat. Despite the score line, it was an engaging contest played in less than ideal conditions.”

Austin Elliott was named the Honiton Man of the Match.
