Honiton Tigers Under-8s have ended their wait for a win after claiming an excellent victory over Sidmouth during a series of matches against their East Devon neighbours.
In four encounters the Tigers drew two, lost one and gained that elusive first success.
The squad of Ewan Powers-Maguire, Jake Giles, Harvey Hannay, Henry Devin, Harry Madge, Tom Phillips and Finley Offer-Hoar lost their opening game 9-8. Hannay (3), Giles (3), Devin (2) scored, but it wasn’t enough in a thrilling game which could have gone either way.
Determined to claim that first win of the season, the Tigers roared to a 7-5 victory in their second game with scores from Hannay (2), Giles (2), Devin (2) and Powers-Maguire.
Tyler Patch, Dylan Burrough, Josias Drew, Finley Backhouse, Harry Kent, Alexander Goody and Robert Hennessy made up Honiton’s second squad. It was Goody, schooled in Sidmouth, who shone in the first match as he crossed for five tries.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as the visitors earned a 9-9 draw with a late score. Drew (2), Hennessy and Burrough also crossed.
A hat-trick by Goody in the second game wasn’t enough as the spoils were shared again in a 6-6 draw. Patch, Drew and Hennessy making up the tally.
Coach Jon Hannay said: “All the games could have gone either way, but I am relieved for the boys as they’ve been working hard to try and get that first win. The most important thing is that they keep having fun and playing with a smile on their face, which they did do.”
