Honiton Under-11s edged out in terrific contest at Tiverton

Honiton Under-11s were edged out 35-30 after a terrific contest at Tiverton.

What made the closeness of the final score all the more impressive was that at one stage the young Lacemen trailed 20-0! In a sluggish start Honiton were guilty of some soft tackling, but after a half-time chat they were much more focussed throughout the second half. The comeback was launched by a quick-fire Joshua Giles hat-trick of tries before Isaac Stanbury powered his way over in a maul and then Joe Evans crossed. This sudden burst of scoring saw Honiton into the lead for the first time. However, too much lateral running squandered space out wide and the chance for the Lacelads to build a lead of their own. With Tiverton standing firm they used their superior numbers to good effect late on and scored two unanswered tries before Joe Evans replied and the scores were all square at 30 points all. With time ebbing away it was anyone’s game, but it was the hosts who snatched victory at the death when poor tackling from Honiton allowed Tiverton to cross and take the win by the narrowest of margins.

Despite the disappointment the Lacelads showed real character to come back into the game, but such a sluggish start left them with a mountain to climb. In such a bruising encounter it was a game for the forwards, and Isaac Stanbury was a worthy recipient of the Man of the Man match award for his bravery in the tackle, physicality in the tight and for scoring a fine try.
