Honiton Hawks Under-10s saw action for the first time in three weeks - bad weather had put paid to their previous two fixtures - when they entertained Cullompton.

The Hawks had a squad of 11 players - Archie Trott, Byron Chalmers, Charlie Wheeler, Elliot Arscott, Harry Evans, Harry Haysom, Kyle Moore, Liam Webber, Miles Salter, Taylor Prettejohn and Will Parris.

Cullompton had double the number of players so split their squad into two teams, who each played one game against the hosts.

In the first game, Cullompton were quicker out of the traps and exposed the Hawks’ rustiness from their recent lack of games.

Their aggressive defensive line speed and sharper work at the breakdown restricted the Hawks’ attacking opportunities.

They were able to take advantage of numerous turnovers and were rewarded with a 6-0 try success.

After a few words from the coaches at the break, the boys came out fighting in the second game against the other Cullompton side, upping their intensity and as a consequence they had better field position and more ball to utilise.

This resulted in a deserved win by five tries to one.

The young players deserve great credit for what was a spirited display in the second game for it would have been easy for heads to drop after the disappointment of the first match.

The ‘Best Effort of the Day’ award went to Kyle Moore for a wholehearted, all-action display with some excellent tackling and rucking along with some strong, straight ball carrying.
