Honiton Hawks Under-10s entertained Exeter Saracens in their latest action on Sunday morning.

Due to sickness and injury, the Hawks had a slightly depleted squad of nine players with Byron Chalmers, Charlie Wheeler, Harry Evans, Harry Haysom, Liam Webber, Logan Symons, Miles Salter, Taylor Prettejohn and Will Parris on duty to contest two 8-a-side games with a rolling substitute.

Conditions were wet and muddy underfoot, which, coupled with frequent squally showers, made handling difficult.

In the first game Saracens defended extremely well with some aggressive tackling.

The Hawks were guilty of playing too loosely, forcing passes when the better option would have been to take the contact and recycle the ball for the next phase of play.

Saracens fed off their strong defence and Hawks’ mistakes and ran away with a five tries to nil win.

After a few words from the coaches, the boys changed their game plan in the second game, showing greater control and patience. This, along with a stronger defensive effort, brought the reward of a four tries to one success.

The ‘Best Effort of the Day’ award went to Liam Webber for a wholehearted display both defensively and also in attack with some strong, straight ball carrying and a try.
