Sad week at Axe Cliff

PUBLISHED: 13:52 16 August 2012

It was a sad week for the Seniors at Axe Cliff with the passing of Brian Wilkes, a former Seniors' Captain and three times winner of the Masters Trophy, writes Janet Dack.

He was the club’s representative on the Devon Men’s Veteran Golfers Association and was ever active in assisting in the running of the section. He will be sorely missed.

● Thirty one Seniors took part in a Bowmaker for the Founders Trophy first played for last year. The outward half is medal play and the inward nine Stableford. Scoring was not easy in the increasingly breezy conditions and the winning score of 20 by Malcolm Glass (18) was an excellent return. Two players were one shot behind on 21 and second place ocb went to Gilbert Cox (19) with Peter Knighting (15) having to settle for third place.

● Geoff Greenslade with his guest Rodney Spiller with 68pts won the Byrt Trophy - AC members with a guest playing a combined Stableford. Second were father and son Philip Arbourne with 65, with Gerry Binmore and Terry Pritchard third with 61. The best home player was Hugh Willis with 37 and the away player Garth Cromwell with 33.

●The ladies combined their annual Captain v Secretary competition with their Bring and Win. The winners were the Captain’s team who were duly presented with their prizes by Lady Captain Barbara Cummings. First pick of the bring and win (everyone a winner) went to Janet Dack followed by Glenda Board.
