Seaton III were crowned the top team in the E Division East when poor old Axminster III, not for the first time this term, were unable to raise an eleven for their trip to Court Lane.

It’s been a damp squib of an end to an otherwise wonderful campaign for Ian Hunt and his side for they were also denied action last weekend with Thorverton III’s temporary home at Witheridge waterlogged.

With Seaton being the odd team out on the final Saturday of the season – the E East has an odd number of teams in it - it means they will, not have played on any of the final three Saturday of a soggy season!

Despite the low-key end to the term skipper Ian Hunt is so delighted with his team’s efforts. He says: “It’s been a right mix of the old and wise with the young and raw! Some of your youngsters have really come of age this season and it augers so well for the future for the club as a whole. The pleasing thing is that we have been able to play good and consistent cricket throughout – when the weather has allowed us to play!”

The team has been made up this season of four wise older players in the shape of Andy Carter, Pete Lawson, Dave Turner and the skipper. Amongst the young brigade there have been some notable contributions.

Hunt says: “James Thomas, particularly in the first half of the season, became a big player for us with the 19 wickets he claimed. Another to get important and regular wickets throughout was Chris Aplin, who also dug us out of two deep holes in the season with his bat. In the later stages of the campaign we saw the emergence of 15-year-old Tim Mitchell with the ball and young Ollie Pinnock featured prominently too. Ollie Aplin, the 13-year-old younger brother of Chris is a tall lad who I expect big things from in the future and he was always bang on the money with the ball when I asked him to bowl. Two other promising prospects are 15-year-olds George Harwood and Sam Reilly who have both played their parts. Yes, it’s been an all-round effort across the age ranges!”

As for next season, Hunt says: “I’ll certainly be back for more, it’s been a pleasure guiding these young lads throughout the season and I’d be a fool not to want more of the same next summer.”
