Seaton A have been crowned Exeter and District Over-60s Triples League divisional champions, writes Linda Stone.
Last Wednesday Seaton A won their final game of the season, beating North Tawton A 46-22 to secure the Division Three title.
The top Seaton triple was that of Peter Newton, Ron Rowley and Les Tooze who won by 27 shots.
In a wonderful season, Seaton A have remained unbeaten for the second successive campaign, a run of 36 games.
Under the captaincy of Ivor Steer, ably assisted by Ron Rowley, Seaton A have been promoted from Division Seven through to Division Two, where they will play next year, in successive season securing title wins in four of the campaigns and being runners-up once!
This feat has been achieved with largely the same group of players. Unfortunately for the team, one of their stalwarts, Alan Wood, has recently moved to Kent and will be difficult to replace.
There was more celebration for the Seaton B team as they secured the Division Five title. Playing at home to North Tawton B, the opening ends were tight, but both Seaton rinks began to get away to ultimately land a 43-19 success.
The team have enjoyed a glorious run-in, banking 42 of a possible 48 points over the last six matches with healthy contributions to the cause from every team member!
Continuing the good feel factor at Seaton has been continued success in friendly matches.
First up were a touring side, Great Holland from Bracknell, and a meeting won by Seaton 109-80. The top home triple was the one of Ian Manchester, Peter Grigg and Angie Mayhew.
On Sunday a six rink team from Sunningdale were beaten 144-88.
Here the top rink comprised Margaret Nicholas, Keith Miles, Ruby Grigg and Ron Rowley, winning rather impressively, 35-15.
Axminster ladies’ sent three triples to Seaton where they won 63-34 with the top triple being; Alice Carter, Gill Sykes and Angie Mayhew, winning 29-6.
With the conclusion of the Two Counties league approaching, Seaton are still in the running to take top place in Devon and go on to the final.
On Saturday a visit from Cullompton resulted in the Mid Devon side being beaten 97-60 with Seaton winning on three of the four rinks. The top rink was the one of Norman Stone, Dave Yardley, Pat Whitworth and Di Morley.
Last Friday the final eight teams from across Devon travelled to Sidmouth to play the concluding rounds of the County Benevolent Triple competition.
Seaton’s team of Maria Johnson, Pat Whitworth and Di Morley, having won through in Section Seven, played a triple from The Elizabethan Ladies (Plymouth) in the quarter-finals and won convincingly.
They then faced a team from Plymstock in the afternoon semi-final. They made a shaky start, falling 5-1 down. However, they stormed back, restricting the opposition to just one more shot leading to them ultimately conceding. Seaton now contest the final of this county competition next weekend at Newton Abbot. All our best wishes will go with them.
