Seaton bowlers launched their week with a home East of Exe League meeting with Feniton that ended with the rinks being shared, but match honours went to the visitors’ to the tune of a 72-55 score line, writes Alan Nicholas.
A Wednesday away game for the Over-60s Triples League A team followed, but this also did not go Seaton’s way as both triples were lost, with the total shots score being 46 to Topsham and just 30 for Seaton.
Meanwhile, the B team followed their previous week’s away win of 39 shots to 31 over Sidmouth B, by landing another six point win, this time against Honiton B, with 44 shots to 26. The top rink being, Mike Clarke, John Vieth and Richard Whitworth, scoring 28 shots to eight.
On Thursday evening a Top Club match took place, at home against Madeira, over five disciplines.
Seaton won the rink and the triple, but lost the pairs and the two and four wood singles. Thus the visitors took the match overall by three disciplines to two. Also on Thursday, the ladies played in the County two-wood triples, when the one triple of, Angie Mayhew, Barbara Sluman and Sue Dando, progressed to the section final, but succumbed to a Sidmouth team.
Friday saw the ladies Over-50s triples league Red team take on Belmont in Exeter and this did produce a very satisfying win for Seaton, taking both triples and the overall shots score by 44 to 23. Top rink for Seaton being that of, Margaret Nicholas, Ruby Grigg and Sue Banwell-Moore, scoring 26 shots to 10 and picking up eight on the last end.
Finally, Terry Hurley-Smith beat Dave Brown of Ottery St Mary, on an extremely wet Sunday morning, to win the County Section Final of the senior four-wood singles, at Seaton. This very tight match ebbed and flowed through the first 15 ends until Terry picked up three shots to get within touching distance of the prize, but Dave fought back and after taking a full house on the 23rd end, the score stood at 20-19, in Terry’s favour. A final thrust on the 24th end saw Terry take the match by 21-19.
