Archant

As the Short Mat season for Seaton Bowling Club draws to a close, the Finals Day was set for the first Thursday in April and was preceded by a lively social evening the night before, writes Alan Nicholas.

The evening event also included a ladies’ versus gents – not so – ‘friendly’ skittles match.

As always , this was a highly spirited and vocal affair. It was eventually won by the gentlemen - much to the disappointment of our lovely ladies.

However, one comment overheard was that the men’s ‘sledging’ was stronger than that of the ‘Aussie’ cricket team!

However, none of this affected the Finals Day, which opened with the Pairs Final which was a 15 end contest between the pairing of Margaret Nicholas and Graham Thomas against the pairing of Angie Mayhew and Les Tooze.

After a hard fought and entertaining match the result went to Angie and Les, who were both in fine form, by 17 shots to seven.

Next up was the Singles Final which was also played across 15 ends with Angie Mayhew taking on Kevin McCarthy.

Again Angie bowled almost faultlessly and Kevin could not break her down, thus Angie took the match with a score of 16 shots to seven.

The short mat section chairman Reg Pluck presented the trophies after the finals and he also handed out the internal triples league winning trophy to the successful team that comprised of Liz Wilde, Terry Hurley-Smith, Linda Stone, Bob Morton and Gwynydd Brazendale.

The day was rounded off with a tasty tea party provided by the catering team.
