Seaton ladies will return to the Leamington Spa next month after the rink of Maria Johnson, Lilian Hurley-Smith, Pat Whitworth and Di Morley won through in the Ladies Senior Rinks County finals, to once again represent Devon at the national finals, writes Alan Nicholas.
An added bonus for the quartet is that Lilian will be awarded her County Badge at Leamington.
The Seaton pairing of Chris and Peter Barradell won the County Mixed Pairs, Group B Final, in a match at Seaton last Friday, winning the match 25-18. This takes the pair, who are relatively new players, having taken up the game just three years ago, move into a showdown with the Group A winners.
Further success in the past week came when Terry Hurley-Smith defeated Leighton Burston, of Ottery St Mary, in a very tight Area Final of the County Men’s 4 wood singles. The 21-18 win takes Terry into the Section Final, to be played at Seaton on July 29.
Moving to more mundane matters, the ladies Over-50’ Triples League Blue team were 51-24 winners when they hosted Okehampton. The win saw them bank all six points with the top triple being the one of Lilian Hurley-Smith, Maria Johnson and Di Morley.
The Red team, playing at Madeira, won one triple and drew the other on their way to a 38-30 success with the top rink the one of Gill Sykes, Liz Wilde and Lin Allison, who won 23-15.
The men’s Over-60s Triples League A team entertained Okehampton B in a match that saw the two triples shared, but Seaton took the match honours to the tune of a 31-27 score line with the top rink being Dennis Ridd, Ron Rowley and Terry Hurley-Smith, who won 18-9.
A Thursday home friendly triples meeting with Chard resulted in a 74-55 success with the top triple being, Bruce Hurson, Esdre Keller and Malcolm Carvell, who won 23-11.
Finally, an away match on Saturday at Ottery St Mary saw Seaton well beaten by a strong Ottery side that won 3-1 on rinks and 99-62 overall.
The lone winning Seaton rink was that of Chris Anton, Alan Nicholas, Chris Barradell and Ron Rowley, who won 25-20.
