Seaton men see 43-match winning run ended by Belmont

Seaton Bowling Club held two open mornings recently, writes Linda Stone.

Although the weather wasn’t brilliant there was a good response and coaching for new members started on Monday, May 18.

There will now be two further open sessions when anyone can come along and try the game for free, on the evening of Friday, June 5 at 5pm or the morning of Saturday, June 6 at 10am.

The first game of the week was a friendly men’s triples game against Chardstock at home. Seaton losing by just two shots, 67 shots to 65. Seaton’s top triple was Ian Manchester, Roy Sykes and Reg Pluck.

The ladies Over-50s Blue team played Sidmouth and, after a very close fought contest, Seaton won one triple and also took the overall win 36 shots to 28. The winning triple was Lilian Hurley-Smith, Marian Vessey and Di Morley.

Seaton men played their Over-60s League matches and the A team finally met their match when, after a winning streak of 43 matches, they went down by five shots to Belmont A! They won one triple with Peter Newton, Ron Rowley and Les Tooze.

Seaton B travelled to a windswept Budleigh where they narrowly missed out on victory by just two shots and so had to be content with a brace of points for a rink win. Top rink was Ed Backhouse, Norman Stone and Jeremy Allison.

Last Saturday, Seaton played Broadclyst, a new fixture this year, in a four-rink triples match. For a change the sun shone and no one had to use their waterproof coats! Seaton won 89 shots to 50. The top triple was Margaret Nicholas, Reg Pluck and Terry Hurey-Smith winning by an impressive 28 shots to eight.
