SEATON Town’s march towards promotion suffered a blow when they were held at Colyford Road by Beer.

The 0-0 draw was far better received in the Beer camp than the Seaton one. Town boss Josh Stunell said: “That is without doubt our poorest display of the season but I think much of the credit for that has to be afforded to Beer. They came with a game plan that worked very well. We need to take it on the chin, accept that it is two points dropped and quickly get back to winning ways.”

Fishermen’s boss Mark Ward said: “We are delighted to have got a point and in fact, feel we ought to have taken all three. We certainly created, and spurned, the best chance of the game. I could not find fault with any of my lads and, had we not lost the influential Mike Wheeler shortly after the re-start to a nasty head injury, I think we may well; have gone on and won the game.”

Wheeler suffered an early second half eye injury that required a visit to hospital, but, despite losing his influential services, still managed to cerate the best chance of the game when Luke Bartlett had a guilt edged opportunity but Town keeper Mark Perham denied him with a smart save.”

Both Town and Beer are in action tonight (Wednesday) with Town entertaining Clyst Valley and the Fishermen making the trip to Wellington. On Saturday, Town, who now have an eight point lead over Sidmouth Town who have three games in hand – the two sides still have to meet home and away, travel to St Martin’s whilst Beer have a day off before beginning a run of midweek matches.

Feniton bagged a richly deserved share of the spoils when they drew 2-2 with hosts Cullompton Rangers who had former Exeter City and Tiverton Town player Richard Pears in their starting line-up.

The Blues trailed 1-0 and 2-1 but bagged a point thanks to two goals from substitute Jonathan French.

Boss Mark Kingdon said: “We played well and fully deserved what we got. Charlie Selley and Paul Dowling produced the stand-out displays and Andrew Rose made some fine saves. I felt we looked the fitter side in the closing stages and am happy with the point. I honestly feel that we have enough in our dressing room to secure a mid-table finish and am confident we will do so.”

Next up for Kingdon and his men is an Acland Park game against high flying Barnstaple Town on Saturday.

Honiton Town boss Paddy Thomas was left to rue two points dropped as his side continue to battle to beat the drop out of Division One.

Town were forced to come from behind to take a point from a 1-1 draw at another of the struggling sides, Sidbury. Thomas said: “We had the chances to nail the game and didn’t take them. Our position is not good and the coming games are going to stretch us but we do have real character in the side as we showed in coming back from a goal down against Sidbury and, for sure, whilst we have the will and the desire, we’ll continue to do battle.”

Town were back in action on Monday night with a home game against the same Heavitree Social United reserves side they face again, albeit in Exeter, on Saturday and they are also in action tonight (Wednesday) with a home game against Witheridge.

Colyton were beaten 2-0 at home by the same Beacon Knights side they had taken a point fro in Exeter seven days before. It proved to be one of those days that seem to hit sides at the wrong end of the table when lady luck completely deserts them. The visiting side scored with their only two real attacks of the game and then their goal led a charmed life.

Colyton’s Keith Somers said: “The final score was not a true reflection on the match, although we created few opportunities we did enough to take something from the game. They (Knights) scored fro their only two real attacks of the 90 minutes – it’s a cruel game when you are sitting at the wrong end of the table!”

Axmouth United continued their march towards a Division Six promotion place with a 6-2 win at Bampton.

Headed goals from Mike Challis and the impressive Tiago Braga saw United take charge but two goals in as many minutes by then hosts levelled things up.

Just before the break Asa Sandman’s deft chip sent United into half-time leading 3-2.

The second half belonged entirely to United who added further goals through Charlie Clarke, Asa Sandman and a Jamie Hughes 25-yard free-kick.

United boss Laurie Forino said: “I was not too happy with a number of things it he first half but we improved a great deal after the break and now, with four home games in succession we have a great opportunity to keep up the momentum in the bid for honours this season.”

Offwell Rangers Reserves were 5-2 home winners over Lapford who were holding the hosts 2-2 at the break.

Vullnet Guri scored both the first half Rangers goals and after the break, sub Andrew Lord headed them ahead, before goals from Jack Knight and Man of the Match, (as awarded by match sponsors Exeter Window Stores), Ollie Cramer, sealed victory.
