Honiton Town Reserves were excellent across the pitch as they won handsomely 4-1 at Sampford Peverell.

With Town’s first team game off the club resisted the temptation to load the second team with senior players with Lewis Couch the only one ‘moved across’ for duty as he has recently found himself on the first team bench and it was an opportunity for him to get a full game under his belt.

It was some Couch class that saw Town into a 1-0 lead and Tim Genders, who capped a fine return to Hippo’s action, scooped the ball into Ryan Dunn’s path and the strike, with breaking stride, coolly slotted the ball home to make it 2-0.

At the break team boss John Lewis urged his side to be more clinical in front of goal whilst also accepting that it was difficult to play a fast passing game on such a heavy surface.

Skipper Joe Knight rifled the ball home to make it 3-0. Goalkeeper Kieran Conway was unlucky when a clearance smashed into the chest of an oncoming striker who the had the easiest of tasks to roll the ball into an empty net! Genders completed the scoring by beating two defenders before stroking the ball beyond the home gloves man.

The Town defence was well marshalled by Mike Wheeler and Aaron Pearse, but it was Rhys Sellick stood out with a shift that included some tenacious defending.

This weekend the Reserves face an immediate reverse fixture against Sampford Peverell.

The Town first team, without a match last weekend owing to a waterlogged Mountbatten Park are at East Budleigh this Saturday (March 7) and face the same opposition at home seven days later.
