Strong takes Axe Cliff Masters

PUBLISHED: 19:42 04 July 2012

Once again on Friday, the wind was unrelenting in its ferocity for the final round of the Seniors’ Masters event, writes Janet Dack.

After leading from the start there was never any doubt that Tony Strong (9) would emerge as winner, which he duly did with a final round of 76 nett and a total of 295, nine strokes ahead of runner-up Mick Tomes (17) on 304.

Four players tied for third on 316, Peter Motson (28), Bill Polley (16), Gerry Turner (11) and Nick Stanton (22).

The medal was won by Bill Polley with an excellent 72 nett, second place went to Phil Christmas (24) with 73 nett, while two players carded nett 75s. Third place on countback went to Terry Jessup (20), with Mick Tomes the player to miss out on the prizes.

There were two 2s, from Bob Berry and Roger Hill.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the team travelled to Minehead and, in benign conditions contrived to win a first away win of the season, beating the home team by 4-2.

Winning combinations for Axe Cliff were Peter Knighting /Bob Graham; Bill Polley/Jack Bannister; Hugh Willis/Mick Tomes and John White/Iain Bain.
