The scoring in the final round of the Axe Cliff Seniors’ Winter League Programme was exceedingly close with six teams within two points of each other, writes Helen Kenworthy.

It was no surprise that the leaders, and eventual winners, Alan Vincent and Gilbert Cox had once again the best score, on this occasion 35 points.

Second, with 34 points, were Terry Jessup and David Lacey, while four teams netted 33 points.

These included Malcolm Glass and Mike Jamieson (third place on countback), Dave Weston and Tony Horton, Rob Heard and Hugh Willis and John Mant and Dave Sammons.

The trophy itself was won in convincing style by Gilbert and Alan with an accumulated score of 217 points.

Second overall place went to Rob Grove and Roger Wright on 205 points and third. to Clive Davie and Phil Wilkins with 204 points.

Recently the final of the Scratch Cup, which starts in October and concludes in March was won once again by Tony Strong who beat Peter Knighting in the final by four-and-three.

This was the seventh successive win for Strong in this event and that is anew club record.

The men’s section played the 11th round of Winter League and first place was baged by Andrew Hellier and Anthony Hellier with 45 points. Alan Kenworthy and Chris Glover claimed second spot with 4.

There was just a single two scored with David Morgan the one to achieve the feat.

The ladies played a match play event and the winning ladies’ were Glenda Board, Barbara Cummings, Janet Dack, Helen Kenworthy and Pauline Willis.
