Honiton Golf Club staged the playing of the Hellier and Steele Perkins Trophies, writes Andy Wagner.

Players completed a pair of rounds to complete 36 holes in the bogey competition over the weekend.

Bogey is one of the trickiest of formats where the golfer plays match play against the course par. The opening round of the Division One Hellier competition saw Derek Richards (+5), lead the field ahead of Richard Reece (+3) and Stuart Slater (+2)

The second round had Alan Jackson (+2) ahead of Robin Smith (+2) and Stuart Slater again (+1), leaving Derek Richards to take the cup with a collective score of +4. The Division Two Steele Perkins trophy was lead in the opening round by Andy Wall (+4) ahead of Steve Charlton (+2) and Andy Wagner (+1).

However, a tremendous second round of +8 by Steve Bowyer Thornton, finishing ahead of Phil Wall’s (+1) and Richard Townsend (-2), saw him take the trophy with a collective +3

In the Tuesday Mixed play the Chivers Goblets were contested as a Greensome Stableford.

The winners of the Goblets were Olwen and Bill Eaton with 37pts. Second place were Sue Witton and Max Pipe with 35pts on count back from Celia Hamlett and Allan Seager.

There was another bumper bundle of competitions contested by the ladies section with qualifiers for the Coronation Foursomes, Jane Watts and Andrea Squire (39 points), going on to the finals at Bristol and Clifton on August 2.

The runners-up in this competition were Jackie Seager and Henrietta Bradshaw with 33 points. In the Killard Leavey the qualifiers were Elizabeth Ward and Barbara Mullet who will go on to play the finals at Sidmouth on September 14.

A foursomes Stableford was also played and first place was landed by Andrea Squire and Jane Watts (39 points), followed by Elizabeth Ward and Barbara Mullet in second place with 34 points. Jackie Seager and Henrietta Bradshaw were third with 33 points, Julie Eyles and Di Wall fourth with 31 points, and fifth place went to Joan Smith and Jeanne Mackinnon with 30 points on count back.

Sixty eight seniors turned out for a Texas Scramble on a warm and humid day, which made the return to the clubhouse bar most welcome.

The four prize-winning groups all played to about par or slightly better and they were headed by Bill Eaton, Alan Pollock and Paul Ritchie with a net score of 61.4. Behind them were Jim Wallis, John Dickinson and Ian Hamilton followed by John Vessey, Stan Squire and Rob Sexton. Norrie Fleet, John Bevan and John Gillingham took the last prize. There were eight players who scored twos, but Ray Cross outshone them with a hole in one at the second hole. The rest of the players were pleased to help him celebrate.
