THE green shoots of recovery that have been noticeable at the Sector Lane home of Axminster Town are almost in full bloom after a second successive Peninsula League win.

Visiting Newton Abbot Spurs had the better of the first quarter of the match.

However, the defence stood firm and, despite the visitors having the lion’s share of the ball, they were restricted to long-range efforts at Chris Higgs in the Tigers’ goal.

A tweaking of formation just before the half hour paid instant dividends, as a wonderful delivery from Jamie Barfoot saw Ben Turner put pressure on the Newton Spurs centre- half to such degree that the hapless defender got the final touch to send the ball past his own keeper.

Unfortunately, Turner was injured in the process and became the second player forced off for the hosts, joining Adam Downes on the sidelines after the Tigers striker had limped off earlier in the game.

The second half saw Town create good chances whilst the rejuvenated back line, looked strong and disciplined. Another quality delivery doubled the lead with Callum Garrett applying the finishing touch.

Much of the positive nature of the Tigers game was centred on the lively Terry Emmett who, once the game was seemingly won, was withdrawn from the action.

With five minutes to go, Chris Higgs made a superb save, but with the very next Spurs’ raid they scored and it needed an exceptional last minute Higgs’ save to ensure the Tigers won a second successive game.

?This weekend the Tigers travel to meet a Stoke Gabriel side who have drawn with two of the top three in their last two games.
