After beating Feniton by 33 runs in the Corthinian Cup regional final on Monday Uplyme found themselves on the wrong end of the Devon League encounter between the same sides, writes Edward Clarke.

Asking Feniton to bat first Uplyme felt they did a good job in the field to restrict the home side to a below par score of 179. Charlie Warner, with 3-33 and Nick Dinnison, with one for 24, were the pick of the bowlers.

Change bowlers Rhys Davies, Steve Batey and Paddy Barraclough also took wickets with the support of enthusiastic out fielding where five catches were snapped up. Charlie Selly top scored with 61 for Feniton, but although four other batsmen made starts they could not go on to really punish the visitors.

At tea Uplyme felt confident that they could reach their target ,but their hopes were shattered within the first ten overs when veteran bowler Francis Pyle and Brian Cann ripped through the top order leaving them shattered on 11 for five!

Not one of the top six batsmen managed double figures in what skipper Steve Batey described as the worst piece of irresponsible batting he had witnessed this season.

Instead of digging in and building an innings batsmen went for their shots and paid the price. Numbers nine and 10, Paddy Barraclough, 16, and Rhys Davies, 15, tried to restore some order to the proceedings with a stand of 32, but it proved to be too little too late and the innings closed on a disappointing 70.
