Water Babes were in action for the first time this summer and were up against Pixies, who started six goals adrift, writes Graham Ingram.

At the half-way stage Pixies had moved into the lead at 40-37 and then continued to move ahead whilst denying the Water Babes any more scoring opportunities, to finish 52-37 winners. Sara Green was the Pixies star whilst Rowan Bradford was the pick of the Babes.

Despite starting 0-26 against Tip Top Trees, Flamingos were keen to rise to the challenge, but 3Ts, with Laura Dane playing well, made them work hard. It wasn’t until the third quarter that Flamingos got on level terms, but once there they forged ahead to win the match by 49-38 thanks to some good play from Rachel Burrow.

Last week Signs South West had got off to a good start with a win against Uplowman, whilst Hi Q had lost narrowly to Flamingos. Tonight Hi Q started two goals in front and by quarter time were 29-23 ahead. With Laura French in great form Hi Q had the better of the second period and by half way had increased the lead to 40-26.

Debbie Wheeler then led a fight back for SSW and the arrears were reduced to 36-47 going into the final period. The last quarter went goal for goal with Hi Q gaining a fine 55-43 victory.

OPG were in action for the first time, and they were up against Uplowman, looking for a win after their opening day defeat. Uplowman had started the game 8-2 ahead but by quarter time OPG had pulled back to 12-13 thanks to good work from Kirsty Wackley. By half time the game was on a knife edge with the score all square at 23-23.

In the third period Andrea Britten began to pull the strings for Uplowman as they moved 36-31 in front, a lead that proved crucial as OPG tried hard to get back but with Uplowman holding on to win by 43-39.

Howden hawks opened their campaign with a win over Otter Valley Dairy. Depite starting four goals behind they battled hard to record a 59-51 win – with Tara Andrews the player of the game for Hawks and Pippa Wright the player for the Dairy.

After the first week it was Sidmouth Toucans who had topped the table. Tonight they were up against JD Tyres who had also had a winning first week. The game was a closely contested affair with Toucans 45-44 ahead at half way and 53-52 up at the start of the final quarter.

Last week they had turned in a devastating final period to clinch victory and tonight they did it again. With Jo White pushing them on they dominated the final quarter to win by 65-56 and retain the top spot. Nothing that Helen Freemantle or the other JD players could do could stop the Toucans blitz!
