Shaves Cross is a lovely country race up to Pilsdon Penn and down again, it is five long, country miles, but has excellent views and is good honest fun, writes Dave Mutter.

On a pleasant Saturday evening, the 51st running of this race took place. The first AVR home, in fourth place overall in 32.52 was newcomer Josh Hobson.

Eleanor Wood was 12th overall and second lady in 34.48, winning the Vet Cup.

Steve (Retro) Reynolds, running on home ground, had a good run coming 25th in 39.42.

The young Watson brothers sped off a little too quickly and got caught out going up the steep hill, but still managed to get very commendable times and positions.

Will was 28th and Chris 29th - even after stopping to help another runner in trouble. We expect to see these boys continue to improve and impress in the future. After the race, the beer tent and the hog roast were most appreciated by all the runners. Well done, Shaves Cross on yet another fine event.

One lone AVR runner actually ran the great west fell race on Saturday afternoon. Robin Carter and James Jackson were going to run, but got held up in traffic and did not make the start time, so they went for a nice walk instead!

It all was worth it for Tim Lenton though as he did get there and came first in 38:27.
