Seventeen-year-old Andrew Watson was enjoying his holiday in France and came across a 10.5k run called La Ronde des Phares at Le Verdon-sur-Mer which is just north of Bordeaux, writes Dave Mutter.

On a blisteringly hot day Andrew joined in with 300 others and, despite the heat, ran incredibly well and finished 21st.

In England you are a senior until aged 40, but in France they have a category for 17 to 21-year-olds called “cadet”.

Andrew was delighted to have won that category and was presented with a cup and bottles of wine for his achievement.

●Alex Todd had a storming run at the Maiden Newton Madness multi-terrain 10K finishing 2nd overall in 40.55.

●Dalwood 10k (ish) is quite a challenging hilly run. Nine AVR runners decided to chance their luck on Wednesday and attack all the hills, mud and gloop.

First man in was AVR member Tim Lenton, closely followed by Alex Todd.

James Jackson was not far behind, then Martin Croad who had an amazingly strong run and was pleased to have beaten Eleanor Wood who puffed in behind him.

Wood, however, was dead chuffed to be the first lady home. Robin Carter did sneak up on Eleanor in the woods and overtook her, but competitive Wood blasted by her on the road, but Carter was still the second lady back.

Ian Clements was next in having a great time then it was Robin Britton over the line and moments later Andy Sayers arrived with a big smile on his face.

There was a wonderful curry and plenty of beer to be enjoyed post race.

Many thanks to Dalwood for putting on this wonderful country event.

●For a nice scenic charge around the tors of Dartmoor there can be nothing better than the Sticklepath fell race.

This was 15.5K long and included Belstone Tor, Oak Tor, Steeperton Tor and Cosdon Beacon.

Tim Lenton had a great race and won it in 1:17:27. Robin Carter was the first lady finisher, 21st overall in 1:38:19. James Jackson ran very well to finish sixth, 1:23:47 and Robin Britton was 20th, 1:38:14.
