Axminster bowlers only managed one win in their five mixed friendly matches played in the past week, writes David Harris.

However, there were some excellent individual performances, none more so than from 15-year-old James Windsor who played on grass for the first time at Crewkerne and starred in what was the only winning Axminster rink!

First up was a narrow defeat at Bridport (96-79) with a winning rink of Brenda Edwards, John Hill, David Harris, and Brian Clark (26-25), before losing at Chard (78-56) with Margaret Stancliffe, David Harris, and Ken Quick managing a 20-9 win. Next up a 65-54 home loss to Taunton Vivary with a win here for Morrison Brown, Barbara Mowatt, and Ann Clayton (14-9) and a tie for Margaret Stancliffe, Les Clark, and Brad Hallowes (15-15). A meeting with Crewkerne was lost 82-58, but there was an excellent win for Joan Quick, James Windsor, and Ann Clayton (20-16).

Finally the bowlers enjoyed the taste of success with an 81-69 success against Ottery with wins here for Daphne Ryan, Margaret Brown, David Harris, and Steven Apsey (27-17), John Packham, Pam Hunter, Les Clark, and George Mabon (20-12), and David Sloman, Margaret Stancliffe, Ann Clayton, and Bob Sherborne (19-17).

There was defeat though for the Axminster Over-60s teams with defeats at Pinces Park (19-49) and at home to Phear Park (28-40) with no winning rinks!
