Wiscombe Park all set for a busy weekend of top racing action

Torbay Motor Club have once again attracted a packed and exciting entry to their Wiscombe Park hill climb being held this coming Saturday (May 18), writes Rupert Barker.

The event has drawn support from Fusion Fostering, H R Owen Specialist Cars and the Tipton Garage/Alansway Body Repairs.

Drivers and riders in a wide variety of machinery will battle at the East Devon venue for points in regional, club, venue and series-specific championships and the ACU National Hill Climb Association championship.

In a change for 2019, the action starts early with just one practice run, led away by the production saloons, and followed by modified saloons, sports and racing cars, sidecar combinations and solo motorcycles. The first timed runs will now start mid-morning, with two further timed runs after lunch.

The season-opening events at Wiscombe over the final weekend of April, saw keen competition for early championship points and further intense action is in prospect on the 914 metre parkland track near Southleigh.

Class A2 sees local Ottery St Mary-based driver James Hudson (VW Golf GTi), bidding for the class win against stiff opposition from Jonathan Wright (also VW-mounted) and Neil Catling's Lotus Elise.

The winner of class A3 will be anyone's guess, with a wide variety of cars in the packed 17-strong entry, including the Audi TT of returning Torbay MC members, husband and wife Roger and Jo Hodgson, and the beautiful Alfa Romeo 4C of the very experienced Rodney Eyles.

A4 is another strongly supported class, the 13 entries including favourite Martyn Glover's Mitsubishi Evo 4, Porsche Cayman and 968 models, the Subaru Impreza of Mike Potter and the shared Toyota Celica GT4 of George and Anthony Brown.

Westfield and Caterham derivatives of the classic Lotus 7 design dominate classes B2 and B3, but Torbay MC's Roger Coote (Ginetta G4) and Tim Dodwell (VW Scirocco) could spring a surprise in these fiercely contested classes.

Ottery St Mary driver Martyn Pike looks like the man to beat in the C2 modified class, with his closest rival likely to be Burnham-on-Sea's Gordon Isles (VW Tigra) and in C3 Wiscombe veteran Jonathan Williamson wheels out his immaculate - and rare - Porsche 911 Carrera.

In class D1, the Exeter father and son pairing of David and Jan Yeo give their Ford Legend a second run at Wiscombe but the initial promise of their new, and unusual, car will face strong opposition from Tim Pitfield (DJ Firecat), Luke Trotman's Mallock and the ever-rapid Stuart Lillington in his Radical SR4. Tavistock-resident Doug Bennett's heavily modified and spectacular Sylva Stryker is the sole entry in D2.

No less than 14 entries across the three racing car classes will provide some excellent entertainment in the fight for the overall honour of Fastest Time of the Day (FTD), with national series contender and Wiscombe expert Ed Hollier in his Pilbeam MP62 looking like the man to beat. Other leading contenders include past-winner Mike Lee (OMS 30000), Andrew Forsyth and Ben Bonfield, whilst experienced saloon and sports car hillclimbers Andy Stoddart, Jonathan Langmead and Russell and Gerry Tout are all moving up into the open-wheel classes in 2019.

In the one-make classes, five DEWS club and six MG Car Club entries will be aiming for top scores in their respective championships.

Action on the hill starts with one practice run and the first of the competitive timed runs is scheduled to take place by mid-morning.
