After several days of dismal weather in East Devon, bright sunshine awaited the five AVR’s as they arrived at Budleigh Salterton for the scenic, multi-terrain 2105 Jurassic Coast 10k race, writes Dave Mutter.

The gruelling first 5k of the route lead the runners up the steep SW Coastal paths ascending the scenic cliff tops, a fast, flat 5k then followed to the finish.

Out of a field of 251 runners, Eleanor Wood was the first AVR home rocketing in with a very impressive time of 46:20 - a brilliant fourth place in her age category and 36th overall.

Next home for AVR was Angela Kerr who stormed in on this, the first race of her 60th year, in 56:47, 18th in her age category and 116th overall.

For Sarah Herfet, a relatively new member of AVR, it was the fourth time she’d run this race and with the enthusiastic support of her fellow AVR buddies she smashed through the hour achieving a time of 59:20 finishing 25th in her age category and 139th overall.

The male AVRs were no less impressive with their efforts. Martin Kerr also ran a great race and finished 63rd in his age category - 197th overall with a time of 1:07:50.

John Mellodew, despite taking a tumble on the uneven terrain, still managed to romp home in a time of 1:09:08 finishing 67th in his age category and 205th overall.

All AVR members agreed that the course was fantastic and the views spectacular and would like to do the race again next year.

In other club news, congratulation to Robert Kerr for winning the senior August handicap race in 30:01, he was followed by Dave Thomas, 25:30; James Green, 19:20; Eleanor Wood, 24:02 and Jon Day, 22:07. Clare Hansford still leads the rankings with 121 points with Craig Tiley sitting second with 105 and Margaret Pearce lies third with 100 points.
