The Yarcombe Yomp is a tough, five, or 10-mile loop, muddy at the best of times, writes Dave Mutter.

This Saturday pushed even the very toughest runner to their limit. The fields were sloppy wet and full of massive puddles, great fun.

The race was won by Roger Easterbrook of Teignbridge Trotters in 1:15:05. The first AVR home was Patrick Devine-Wright, third, 1:17:02. Amy Greenhalge had a superbly strong run finishing sixth overall, first lady, 1:20:34. Rookie Mike Clark made his mark coming 11th, 1:28:00 - more to come from this new runner.

Josh Hopson was 13th, 1:29:17. Clare Hansford had an outstanding run in difficult conditions finishing 15th, third lady overall, 1:30:19 followed by Eleanor Wood 17th in 1:31:43 winning the first vet 50 prize. Tim Sibley with a rare run on a Saturday thanks to his new job was 19th in 1:34:53. Geoff Woodward led home a group of AVR’s in 29th place in 1:41:51 and then came Steve Reynolds 30th, 1:42:28, 31st was Alan Morbey in 1:43:26. In 32nd place was Anna McLoughlin running well taking 1:43:56. Tess Stone also running her first race for AVR came home in 34th, 1:45:05, Margaret Pearce was 35th, 1:45:39. It was good to see Steve Maclure racing again as he finished, 42nd place, 1:50:47.

Chris Hill was 43rd even after a fall in the woods in 1:53:49. The third new AVR runner was Anders Larsson, 46th in 1:47:58 followed by Yvette Hill 53rd, 2:05:17. Completing the AVR 10-mile runners was Sue Venn, 2:10:34. There were 57 runners in total. Most of the recorded times were about 10 minutes slower than last year thanks to the gloopy mud and soaking wet fields!

The one loop five-mile run was won by Flo Swan who paced Amy all the way round the first lap finishing in a magnificent time of 39:08, having already swum two miles before the race. Robin Britton was 6th in 56:03. A big thank you needs to be directed towards Robin Carter and James Jackson for putting on such a great event.

Other AVR helpers were Garry, Janet, Dave, Phil, Rick and Amy.

After the event runners were all treated to scrumptious soups, cakes and hot drinks in Yarcombe village hall. This event raised over £600 for the hall funds!
