East Devon District Council's Health Service has received an award from the Noise Abatement Society in recognition of its work.
The Society said EDDC had made an 'outstanding contribution to noise reduction,' being proactive in trying to anticipate and prevent new noise problems.
Noise problems increased with the introduction of the smoking ban in public buildings and workplaces in July 1, 2007.
EDDC officers carried out a series of briefings for the District's Licensed Victuallers Associations. Council members highlighted residents' fears over the prospect of outside smoking and drinking, with extended opening hours.
The Environmental Health Service was presented with the John Connell Enterprise Award, which was accepted on behalf of the council at the House of Commons by council chairman Paul Diviani.
He said: "I know that Environmental Health is not perceived to be the most glamorous service to work in and can often be overlooked in the celebrity stakes. "Until recently, I was involved in a very busy Inn for some 19 years and had many an in-depth discussion with Environmental Health officers, whilst keeping a watchful eye on the cat.
