Young professional singers will be performing in Shute and running a workshop for pupils at the school.

Grassroots Opera, a company of young professional singers, will be performing an adapted version of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice on the newly landscaped outdoor stage at Shute Primary School.

This will be a special performance which will be shortened to suit children and adults alike.

The company will also be running a workshop at the primary school beforehand, which will lead to pupils performing in the chorus on the day.

Grassroots Opera was founded in February 2018 by Devon-based soprano Chloe Stratta and mezzo-soprano Anna Marie McLachlan.

The company now has plans to take its production to a number of small venues during the autumn and spring.

They aim to present opera in a way that is accessible to anyone, in intimate venues where audience members can feel immersed in the action and connect to the emotions presented.

This event at Shute Primary School, generously supported by Shute Festival of Literature and Landscape and The Joanna Leach Foundation, will provide a gateway into opera for children at the school.

It will also give them the opportunity to perform alongside professionals.

Director Chloe Stratta said: “Opera is a fantastic means through which young people can explore things such as recognising and presenting emotions, how music can reflect text; and also just to witness and be a part of something very beautiful and meaningful.”

The performance will take place on the outdoor stage at Shute Primary School (or in Shute church in bad weather), at 4.30pm on Friday, September 14.

Tickets are £10 on the door, to include tea and cake from 3.30pm.
