The Barbirolli Quartet is known for its diverse, prolific repertoire and dynamic approach to performance. The Times recently described them as "forthright, full-blooded musicians, afraid of nothing" and The Strad hailed their "superbly realised performance" and "precision of ensemble at formidable rates of energy".

Formed originally in 2003, at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, the Barbirolli Quartet brings together a wealth of experience, its founding members each having performed widely in their native countries of Canada, Wales and Australia, before coming to England to continue their studies. They are now based in London. They are 'Quartet in Residence' at Salford University and in 2010 they make a return to the Wigmore Hall, following their recent selection by the Kirckman Concert Society.

On Thursday, February 25, this dynamic, youthful quartet are to play for the SeatonMusic audience. The programme will include string quartets by Mozart, Luciano Berio and Brahms.

The Mozart String Quartet no22 K589, written around 1790, is among his finest contributions to the form and has been described as a work of "enigmatic beauty".

Luciano Berio's elegiac String Quartet No3 Notturno carries the epigraph To Night, the ensilenced word and the composer himself said of it that it is "full of silence," of "unspoken words and fragmentary conversations". This is a rare chance to hear, live at a local venue, traditionally conceived music by a composer more usually associated with the uncompromising modernism of the electronic age.

In his Opus 51 No1 Quartet, Brahms overcame his near pathological fear of comparisons with Beethoven to produce a quartet of great beauty, showing that characteristic richness of texture, which is so quintessentially Brahms.

The performance takes place at Seaton Town Hall and will begin at 7.30pm. Tickets for the concert are priced at 12 (free if you are a student) and are available on the door or from Eve Gallery, Fore Street, Seaton, telephone (01297) 21482, if you wish to book in advance. Either way you will be assured of a warm welcome at what promises to be an evening of fine music-making.
