Eclectica! Is another find of "Concerts in the West" director Catherine Hodgson.
As she would admit, others had found them first; Ronnie Scott and the Oxford Jazz Festival, and Dartington, too ... so we are in good company.
Eclectica!'s appeal comes in the unique nature of their music. They have redefined the string quartet, replacing the second violin and the viola with two guitars, bringing the groove and drive of the Meier & Oxley guitar duo and coupling them with the soaring lyricism from the traditional strings of two of the world's finest strings players, Lizzy Ball (violin) and Bernard Gregor-Smith (cello). Bernard, of course, is the father of Ben, who gave such a wonderful performance at the Marine Theatre on April 15.
Eclectica! might typically perform tangos from Argentina, sambas from Brazil, standards from North America and works by Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Rimsky-Korsakov which all gives credence to the group's name.
This concert is preceded by a mid-series reception which will allow the audience to mingle a little more than usual. It is at the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis, on Saturday, May 8. 7.15pm?reception, 7.45 concert. Tickets, £15, (01297) 422138. Full details at
