A capella group Lyra from St Petersburg to perform in Stockland

Lyra, from St Petersburg, in Russia, will be performing at St Michael and All Angels Church, Stockland.

An a capella group from St Petersburg, in Russia, will be performing in Stockland next week.

Lyra will be performing at St Michael and All Angels Church, Stockland on the evening of Wednesday, May 15.

The group consists of four members, bass, soprano, contralto and tenor and are involved with the St Petersburg Conservatory.

A spokesman for the event said: “They are a small, mainly a cappella vocal ensemble although they perform some solo songs with piano accompaniment, and were founded in St Petersburg, Russia.

“Their concerts are an absolute treat and usually consist of two parts.

“In the first part, they perform sacred music of Russian Orthodox Church, which contains pieces by famous composers such as Tchaikovski, Tchesnokov, Rachmaninov, Gretchaninov and some lesser known outside of Russia, but great masters of choir music.

“They also perform examples of ancient church music.

“In the second part of the concert, they sing Russian folk songs in all their variety: comic, lyric, dancing, love songs.

“Besides that, there are also pieces of secular choir music by Russian composers in their repertoire.”

He also said that they also have experience of performing programmes of romances and arias from operas by Russian composers.

He continued: “The church chants are in the Church-Slavonic language (an ancient language, a kind of Russian, which has being used as the only one in the Russian Orthodox Church).

“The folk songs are in Russian.

“They make announcements in English throughout the concert programme, telling the audience about the Russian orthodox tradition, church and folk music, as well as about every single piece they perform.”

The cost of the ticket will include an interval glass of wine and light refreshments.

Parking will be available in the village and in the former Kings Arms car park.
