Now in its 22nd year, the Summer Play Festival, which takes place at the Manor Pavilion Theatre, in Sidmouth,

draws theatregoers from all over East Devon, as well as having a database of almost 1,000 holidaymakers who go to Sidmouth year after year with the prime object of seeing some of the dozen or more plays that make up the three-month season from July to the end of September.

The Herald's sister paper, the Sidmouth Herald, sponsors a residents' season ticket for theatre lovers in East Devon that enables them to see 12 plays in the season, for the price of 10. The first play, which opens on Saturday, June 28, is a riotous comedy, The Owl and the Pussycat followed by a world premiere of a new tense play, The Palm Court, by playwright Mike Claughton that will be directed by Imogen Vance, the artistic director of the play festival.
